Since the age of ten, the artisan and rubber tapper José Rodrigues works with latex extraction in rubber plantations in Acre. Ten years ago, he started making rubber shoes using a technique in which ‘latex sheets’, the so-called Half Artifact Sheet (FSA), are produced. He combines this technique, created by the Chemical Technology Laboratory of the University of Brasília, with the traditional knowledge, passed on by his father, also a rubber tapper. He extracts the latex from the trees, produces the rubber sheets and designs the shoes, for women, men and kids. In addition to that, José Rodrigues also works to train other rubber tappers and participates in exhibitions.
